OET grades, the 0–500 scale, and what a 'B' actually means.
How the OET reports results, how the numeric scale maps to letter grades, and how to read your statement of results without second-guessing it.
Grades and the numeric scale
Each of the four sub-tests is scored on a 0–500 numeric scale and reported as a letter grade from A (highest) to E. You receive a separate grade for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — there is no single combined OET score; each sub-test stands on its own.
Scores are reported in multiples of 10 — you will see 350 or 360, never 357. Boundaries are equated slightly per test version so that a grade means the same thing across different papers; the bands below are the nominal mapping.
How scores map to grades
The nominal band boundaries on the 0–500 scale.
| Grade | Score range | What it broadly indicates |
|---|---|---|
| A | 450–500 | Very high level of English in a clinical setting. |
| B | 350–440 | Good command; the level most regulators ask for. |
| C+ | 300–340 | Moderately good, but below most professional requirements. |
| C | 200–290 | Modest; not usually sufficient for registration. |
| D | 100–190 | Limited. |
| E | 0–90 | Very limited. |
Which grade do you need?
Most healthcare regulators and employers require a B (around 350) in each of the four sub-tests, sometimes accepting a C+ in one. But requirements differ by country, profession and organisation, and they change — the only authority on what you need is the body you are applying to.
Because each sub-test is graded separately, a strong Reading grade will not lift a weak Speaking grade. Aim to clear the bar in every sub-test, then shore up your weakest one rather than polishing your strongest.
Reading your statement of results
Your statement shows the numeric score and letter grade for each sub-test. On this platform, mock results use the same 0–500 scale and A–E grades so the practice feels familiar — but they are indicative practice results, not an official statement.
AI-generated Writing and Speaking grades are provisional until a teacher signs them off. Use them to see where you stand and what to work on, and lean on the human review for the judgements that matter.
Honest note
The bands here describe the OET reporting scale for preparation purposes. Official boundaries are set and equated by the test owner and can change; this tool is independent and not affiliated with them. Mock results are indicative and carry no certification.
